CG evaluating 3-D printing

Finding spare parts for anybody can be tricky, but for the crew of a Coast Guard cutter, spare parts can be a significant issue in completing a mission or negatively affect the working environment. The Coast Guard Research and Development Center in New London, Conn., is currently studying how the use of 3-D printing may improve mission readiness through logistical support. Now in the evaluation phase, 3-D printers are available to crews on five CG cutters as well as at several operational shore units, including CG Base New Orleans and Baltimore.
