Red snapper bill opposed

Louisiana Republican Congressman Garret Graves wants to shift management of red snapper sport fishing from the federal government and into the hands of Gulf Coast states. The proposal has drawn opposition from the seafood industry and conservation groups. The National Fisheries Institute has joined with Ocean Conservancy and the Natural Resources Defense Council in speaking against Graves’ bill. Those groups believe handing management to the five states – Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas - would reverse recent progress to rebuild the Gulf of Mexico's red snapper population.
