PASCAGOULA, Miss. -- The U.S. Navy's next amphibious assault ship,
America (LHA 6), was launched from Ingalls Shipbuilding's floating drydock Monday. Ingalls last week received a $2.38 billion contract to build the next ship in the class,
Tripoli (LHA 7). The two ships are the first in the new America class of amphibious assault ships. The ships are 844 feet long and 106 feet wide and will be capable of carrying a Marine Expeditionary Unit, including Marine helicopters, MV‐22 Osprey and F‐35B Joint Strike Fighter aircraft, allowing it to serve as a small aircraft carrier.
