Rarity: Northern right whale & calf

OKALOOSA ISLAND, Fla. - A female northern right whale and her calf were spotted March 12 off the end of the Okaloosa Island Pier in Northwest Florida. A group of people, on a banana boat run, spotted the duo. A video of the sighting was posted on the Four Points by Sheraton Destin-Fort Walton Beach hotel’s Facebook page. Jeff Fogle, director of animal management at Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, was notified by Florida Fish and Wildlife and went out to see the whales. With the help of a beachgoer’s drone, Fogle was able to make a positive species identification. It’s a rarity for the species to be seen in the Gulf of Mexico. There are only 400 northern right whales in existence, he told the NW Florida Daily News. (Source: NW Fla.
