The BP oil spill has now eclipsed the size of the 1979 spill off the coast of Mexico, according to the
Associated Press. The BP spill was already being called the worst in U.S. history. The spill started April 20 with the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon. It's now estimated to have spilled 140.6 million gallons of oil into Gulf waters, based on the highest of the federal government's estimates. The Ixtoc I spill in Mexico was 140 million gallons.
