CG rescues five near Gulfport

NEW ORLEANS - The Coast Guard rescued five people Friday morning from a vessel that ran aground about 20 nautical miles southwest of Gulfport, Miss. Coast Guard Sector Mobile, Ala., received a distress call over VHF channel 16 about the boaters' plight. CG Air Station New Orleans launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew. They recovered all five in stable condition (see video link). Hurricanes and tropical storms can be deadly, and the Coast Guard's ability to conduct rescues can be diminished or non-existent at the height of a storm.
