MS Round Island project dangers
PASCAGOULA – The smallish, man-made island
south of Pascagoula and Gautier, technically named Round Island, is not family
friendly. It currently is called the Round Island Marsh Restoration project - a
220-are island formed with dredged materials from the Pascagoula Channel. It
appears solid, but the soft material beyond the top crust is so soft, one
engineer described it “like quicksand” and hazardous. The state is warning
people not to go there. The project is funded by money from 2010’s Deepwater
Horizon oil spill. It won’t be ready for public use for as long as two years. (Source:
