The Navy will christen its newest Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship, the future USS Charleston (LCS 18), during a morning ceremony Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Austal USA Shipyard in Mobile, Ala. LCS 18 is named to honor the city of Charleston, the second-largest city in South Carolina. New Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer will deliver the ceremony’s principal address. Charlotte Riley, the wife of 10-term and former mayor of Charleston Joe Riley, serves as the ship’s sponsor. (Source:
