Maiden voyage for Eastern’s hopper

Weeks Marine’s new self-propelled hopper dredge Magdalen was delivered Dec. 22 from Eastern Shipbuilding in Panama City, Fla., following sea trials and inspections. The new-build is one of the two newest and largest hopper dredges in the U.S. It brings formidable pumping power to offload beach quality sand or other materials for land reclamation. The dredger sailed from Panama City on its maiden voyage in late December and arrived Jan. 2 to Southport, N.C., for work on the state’s most critical projects: Protection of Highway 12 on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, according to WM’s dredging divisions senior VP, J. Stephen Chatry. (Source: Marine Link 01/03/18)
